Chris: Higher Education

I was pregnant with my first child at the time that George Floyd was murdered. I’m a writer and my supervisor suggested that I write about my feelings as a soon-to-be mother of a Black child during this time of racial reckoning in our country. This topic is not at all related to my job. I shrugged off the suggestion and it never came up again. Being pregnant with a Black child during this time was already stressful and emotional. I was not going to exploit myself simply for an “interesting” post on a website. Overall, I still like my supervisor, but there’s always that nagging thought that she doesn’t get me and what life is like as a Black woman/person. She’s well-meaning, but things like that make you keep someone at arm’s length.
